I am curious about a voice that appears in one of the final scenes of Wozzeck, the 1922 opera by the composer Alban Berg. Two men are walking near a pond for an unknown reason, a Doctor and a Captain. The Captain stops them because he hears a sound. «Do you here? There! It is the water in the pond. The water is calling. It is a long time since anyone was drowned.»
The artist seeks out the mysterious sound of the water where someone has recently drowned, help from recorder player Anna Fusek, turning to fragments from music by Debussy and Berg, and examining the shapes of musical ornamentation. A suggestive environment of paintings and suspended textile sculptures offers an environment for the listener's reflections.
Noyades No.1 is the first in a series of sound pieces. It was commissioned by the Tiroler Kunstpavillon as part of the exhibition Une Autre Voix, November 18, 2016 - January 7, 2017.
